Organization:

FICTION – Are you looking for a novel to read, a great mystery, or intriguing fantasy?  Check out the fiction section!  Books here are organized by the author’s last name.  Spine labels have the letter “F” on them (for “fiction”) and then the first three letters of the author’s last name (“KOR” for Korman).

Look for special stickers on some fiction to find a book that’s right for you.

Yellow dot – Beginning to read. (Kindergarten – Grade 3)

Orange dot – Beginning chapter books (Grade 2 – 4)

Young Adult – Themes and difficulty suitable for Grade 6 – 12

EASY or EVERYONE – That’s what the letter “E” stands for on picture books.  Just like with fiction, these books are organized by the author’s last name.  Look for a large ”S” on the spine label if you want a book by Dr. Seuss, or “B” if you appreciate the artwork and stories of Jan Brett.

BIOGRAPHY – Biographies are books about specific people.  Different libraries organize their collection in different ways.  Some put biographies in their own section; others shelve them in their related subject area with the non-fiction.  We keep biographies with the non-fiction, but mark them with a purple dot for easy identification.  For example, Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone) will be found near books about inventions.

NON-FICTION – Need information for a Social Studies assignment?  Wonder who invented the first computer?  Want to know more about your favourite creature?  Non-fiction is the place for information books.  Everything here is arranged using the Dewey Decimal System.

While it might seem overwhelming at first, just remember that each subject has its own set of numbers, and that related topics tend to be close together.  Ask for directions, or use the catalogue.
